Second Half Defensive Lockdown Leads Rams Past Detroit 69-55

The URI men's basketball team (7-3) defeated (6-6) Detroit 69-55 on Saturday evening at the Ryan Center in front for 4,694 fans. The Rams win their second straight game after losing to Providence. 

See the five takeaways slideshow below. 

URI trailed 36-34 at half time after Detroit closed the frame on a 12-6 run. However, in the second half the Rams showed everyone their lock down defense that they have shown at times throughout the season.

URI held Detroit to only 19 second half points and a shooting percentage of 21.4 while Rhody put up 35 points and came away with the win. 

E.C. Matthews led the Rhode Island with 23 points, 19 of them coming in the second half, and eight rebounds in the game while T.J. Buchanan followed up with 11 points off the bench.

Juwan Howard Jr. led the Titans with 17 points and seven rebounds in the loss. 

URI returns to action on New Years Eve when they host in state rival Brown University at 4 p.m.

Jared Terrell

Not a great game for freshman Jared Terrell on Saturday for the Rams. 

Terrell played 21 minutes four points on one of five shooting with two turnovers. He also only managed one rebound in the game. 

Terrell picked up two fouls  in the first half and two more in the second half to further put him out of rhythm. 

Jared Terrell has been good all season for the Rams, chalk this up to just one of those freshman games

Biggie Minnis

Biggie Minnis played a season high 29 minutes against Detroit and only had two points. 

However, he was able to help Rhody in other ways, contributing a team leading five assists and grabbing five rebounds. He also had one steal in the contest. 

Minnis didn't score but he made himself a factor in other ways which coach Hurley and the Rams will look to see on a more consistent basis.

T.J. Buchanan

T.J. Buchanan led the Rams bench squad with 11 points, four rebounds, one assist and one steal in 28 minutes played. 

Buchanan went three for ten from the field and five for seven from the free throw line. 

Buchanan gave the Rams a huge lift in this game.

E.C. Matthews

E.C. Matthews led the Rams with 23 points in the game however, he only had four points at the end of the first half. 

Detroit did a great job of keeping Matthews under wraps in the first half and had a lead because of it.

However, in the second half Matthews went off for 19 points mostly because he was able to get to the line 14 times and knock down 12 of his shots. 

He also pulled down 7 rebounds in the half.

Lockdown D

They have shown at on different times this season, on the road against Southern Miss and down in Orlando prior to that. 

URI showed it again in the second half against Detroit, allowing the Titans only 19 points and a field goal percentage of 21.4. 

The Rams forced 18 turnovers and scored 22 points off of those turnovers.

Hassan Martin led URI with 3 steals in the contest.
