Common Cause Calls on Primary Winners to Engage in People's Pledge

Common Cause Rhode Island has called on the winners of the party primaries for governor to engage in a People's Pledge. The People's Pledge is a voluntary agreement among the candidates to discourage outside special interest money in the election.

"We are proud that the People's Pledge worked as planned in the Democratic primary and voters were spared the special interest attack ads that are a regular feature in other states," says John Marion, executive director of Common Cause Rhode Island. "This election is too important for our state and we need to hear from the candidates."

Rhode Island Awarded TIGER Grant for Providence Station Transit Center Plan

Governor Lincoln D. Chafee and the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) have announced that the state has received a $650,000 Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant to help the state plan for a new mass transit center in Providence. 

This is one of 72 projects to projects nationwide to receive funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

“This is great news for Rhode Island. The Providence Station is one of the busiest Amtrak stops in the nation and this TIGER grant allows us to further implement the state plan for a new mass transit center in our capital,” Governor Chafee said. “Infrastructure, as well as education and workforce development is one of the key building blocks of a good economy. I am pleased the federal government has recognized the progress we have made.”

Fundraising Reception for Catherine Taylor

On October 1, there will be a fundraiser for Republican candidate for Lieutenant Governor Catherine Taylor.

The event will be held at the Metacomet Country Club from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

The host committee includes Scott Avedisian, Bernie Buonanno, Trudy Coxe, Helena and Bill Foulkes, Katharine Flynn, John Harpootian, Tara Pinsky, John Robitaille, Lila Sapinsley, among others.

Attorney General Peter Kilmartin to Give Opening Remarks Tonight at Mobile App Privacy Conference in Providence

Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin will give opening remarks this evening to a group of app developers meeting at Digital City in Providence this evening where he will discuss best practices for privacy and security in mobile apps. 
 
The event is hosted by ACT | The App Association which represents more than 5000 app development companies from around the world.  Part of its mission is to encourage app developers to not only comply with laws governing privacy and security for mobile apps, but build privacy and security best practices into their apps from the beginning.  They also run Moms with Apps, the largest community of educational and kids app developers in the world.

Jorge Elorza Funding Reception

There is a fundraising reception for Democratic candidate for Mayor Jorge Elorza on October 2 at 6 p.m. at the Providence Marriott.

"The future of Providence is at stake in this election – we can continue moving forward or we can return to the corrupt politics of our past," said Marisa O’Gara, Elorza's campaign manager.
