Barack Obama

Last week was fantastic for the President thanks to the Supreme Court, and  he saw his approval ratings bump up as a result. First, the Obamacare subsidies were ruled legal, which basically upheld the law, and then court ruled in favor of gay marriage nationwide. Those are two big wins for the President which should cement his legacy.

Michael Riley

The former Congressional candidate and GoLocalProv MINDSETTER has literally shaped and driven the story about how the Providence pension system has loaned money to the City of Providence--and the shady accounting that coincided it--with his tenacious commentary on the situation. Riley, who was often criticized for bringing the situation to light, was proven to have been correct all along this week when Mayor Jorge Elorza outlined a plan to pay off the loan over the next few years.

John Jacobson

The Providence real estate professional who has been an outspoken critic of tax stabilization agreements (TSA), made some valid points at the city council meeting this week, where he pointed out that the TSAs are usually a good deal for the state because they bring in income and sales taxes, but don't do as much for the City of Providence. Jacobson makes an excellent point, and he's right to point out that Providence deserves more consideration in the composition and implementation of these deals.

Dave Belisle

The Cumberland Little League all-star team coach, who made national headlines last summer after making a passionate and classy speech to his team after they lost to Texas in last year's Little League World Series, is now featured (along with the Cumberland Little League team) in the new Kellog's Frosted Flakes commercial. Belisle set a good example for youth sports coaches nationwide with his good sportsmanship last year, and if anyone deserves to be in the new Kellog's commercial, it's Belisle.

International Oktoberfest

Newport's loss is Providence's gain. The International Oktoberfest, which features seasonal brews and German cuisine, will be held this year at India Point Park on October 17th and 18th, and should be a good addition to Providence's cultural landscape and will be another good opportunity to feature the state's capital city.

Happy July 4th

Tomorrow marks the United States of America's birthday. Hopefully everyone enjoys the cookouts and fireworks celebrations that will be taking place this weekend and remembers what makes us great--our freedoms. They should always be cherished and safeguarded.

Peter Kilmartin

The Rhode Island Attorney General came under fire from progressive activists this week for opposing the renewal of the Good Samaritan Act, which guarantees that those who suffer a drug overdose and those who report an overdose will not be charged with a crime. Kilmartin's opposition to the law, which was allowed to sunset on July 3, is based on the fact that it hampers the ability of law enforcement to keep drugs off our streets--a reasonable position, and make no mistake about it, Kilmartin deserves credit for working hard to to keep our streets drug free. But saving a life that would otherwise be lost to overdose should trump that stance.

Ebola Virus

Two months after the World Health Organization declared Liberia ebola-free, new cases of the scary disease have been recently confirmed. It is absolutely imperative that world health officials get control the situation before it in order to prevent another outbreak like the one that took place last autumn.

Tax Cheats

GoLocalProv's Stephen Beale highlighted the state's 50 biggest tax cheat businesses yesterday and the list includes heavy hitters such as Applebee's and The New York Times. Overall, the The Division of Taxation has 38,000 delinquent accounts, which total $69.5 million. That's not fair because it forces those who do pay their taxes (on time) to make up the difference.

RI Stimulus Funds

The state of Rhode Island spent just 9-percent of the $1.1 Billion it received, about 95 million, on repairing deficient bridges and crumbling roads in The Ocean State. It's ironic considering the fact that the state department of transportation figures that the state needs to spend roughly that amount to fix our deficient roads and bridges. It's hard not to see the Obama stimulus package--at least how it was spent in Rhode Island--as a case of missed priorities.

Kevin Maynard

The Charlestown resident will agree to plead guilty to stealing granite gravestones from  from the Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, which he used for flooring at his home in Charlestown. Stealing from the a graveyard for your own personal use is pathetic and hopefully Maynard receives a sentence that dissuades others from committing a similar crime.

Boston Sports Teams

The Boston Red Sox are in last place. The Bruins missed the playoffs and just made a suspect trade (of Milan Lucic). The Celtics just completed a disappointing draft after getting swept out of the first round of the playoffs and can't even get prized free agents to sit down for lunch with them. And while the New England Patriots are coming off a super bowl victory, they've had one of their most disappointing off-seasons ever, topped off by Tom Brady's suspension. All of a sudden, it's starting to feel like the mid-nineties again for Boston Sports Fans. Not Hot!
