Led and co-founded by Moses Brown students Abraham Bloom and Sinjon Goldberg, the Providence "Giving Garden" is dedicated to helping the Food Bank of Rhode Island and those with special needs.

"At the Giving Garden our mission is to unlock the potential of willing and able labor and unused corporate green space while enhancing a sense of fulfillment for those who are cognitively challenged. We believe our strategy is both unique and beneficial to both the community and the individuals. By engaging community activism and corporate responsibility we believe there is a potential intersection of corporate green spaces and willing and able labor that would like to contribute to their community," said Sinjon Goldberg, co-founder of The Giving Garden.

Giving Garden volunteers planted cucumbers, zucchini, strawberries, watermelon, sweet peppers, squash, tomatoes, and an assortment of annual flowers using the garden donated by TRAC Builders' office at 28 Wolcott St. in Providence.

Goldberg went on to note that 174,000 Rhode Islanders are enrolled in SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), which is double the number from before the recession or one in eight Rhode Island households lacks enough food.

Prior to the recession, member agencies of the Rhode Island Community Food Bank served 33,000 people each month. Now, this same network serves 60,000 people each month.

The goal of the Giving Garden is to give people with cognitive challenges a chance to give back through gardening.  The clients are able to utilize and undeveloped landed provided by the partnership to grow produce with the goal of donating the crop yield to a community food bank.
