Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien confirmed to GoLocalProv Monday that the new owners of the Pawtucket Red Sox plan to move the team out of the city.

“The disappointing and devastating news is that they’re not considering staying in Pawtucket,” Mayor Grebien told GoLocalProv.

Grebien and other city officials were briefed late Sunday night about the new owners’ plans for the team.

He would not comment on who the new owners were, or where they planned on moving the team, although speculation is that the team is eyeing Providence as a new home. “Out of respect to them, I’ll let them make that announcement,” said Grebien.

Grebien still plans on trying to keep the team at McCoy Stadium, the home of the International League PawSox since 1973.

“There’s still value in the site, and I plan on being aggressive, but respectful, in trying to prove to the new owners that McCoy is the place for the PawSox to stay,” said the Mayor.
