MacRae says most people don’t start the process because they are overwhelmed, so break it down and think about how you want to start.
2.Distractions
Minimize the distractions: TV, radio, phone, children.
3.Staying focused
Once you get started, MacRae says don’t leave the room you’re working in.
To help, she says to keep an empty bin in the room to transfer items later that need to go elsewhere.
4.Set time limits
Fifteen minutes or 3 hours, set a time limit and MacRae says this will keep you on task.
5.Holding yourself accountable
Keep an organization journal and write down goals or projects. MacRae says after you’ve accomplished a project, write about how you felt and your distractions.
6.Think about how you’re going to maintain once you’ve completed these projects.
The real work begins when you start maintaining organization.
Bonus:
- Instead of trying to organize your home in one month, MacRae suggests breaking it down into monthly projects. Here is an example:
- January: Kitchen
- February: Paper
- March: Bathrooms
- April: Closets & Bedroom
- May: Garage
- June: Spare Bedroom
- Late summer/fall: Kids and back to school/Home office
- September: Basement
- October: Closets (you should be going through your closets twice a year)
- November: Holidays
- December: Holidays
