URI to Honor 8th Grade Gandhi Essay Contest Winners

The University of Rhode Island will honor 8th grade Gandhi Essay contest winners on Wednesday, May 4 starting at 5 p.m. in the Kirk auditorium at URI's Kingston campus. 

Gandhi's famous quote "an eye for an eye will only make the whole world blind" served as the essay prompt for this years' contest. 

This year's essay contest saw 360 submissions.

Along with recognizing the contest winners, the Gandhi Award for Compassion and Selfless Service will be awarded to students who show the qualities of compassion and service. This award comes from Gandhi's philosophy, "the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself int he service of others."

The Essay Contest 

The purpose of the Gandhi Essay contest is to celebrate the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi and also to encourage Rhode Island students in Grade 8 to think about and be challenged by his legacy. 

The contest was established in 2010. 

URI Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies 

The University of Rhode Island Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies subscribes to the values of M. Gandhi and Dr. M.L. King Jr. by advocating the teaching and practice of nonviolence.
