Vance Gilbert Plays the New Bedford Folk Festival this Weekend

Happy Independence Day! The July 4th weekend brings all kinds of sonic incarnations from folk to disco to classical as well as some of the best homegrown bands. And we throw in a little classic rock for an extra bonus pick this week on “5 Live Music Musts.”

New Bedford Folk Festival this Weekend

The best area Folk Festival outside of Newport happens every July 4th weekend in the streets of downtown New Bedford. The New Bedford Folk Festival brings top national and regional talent every year and presents these artists on seven stages all weekend long. Top artists this year include Vance Gilbert, Patty Larkin and John Hammond. Ticket and vendor prices are reasonable and the mood is always festive. It’s a great family event as well. Tickets are $20 per day, $25 for the weekend, kids under 12 Free. Music runs from 11AM-9PM both days.

Disco Party at Twin River Tonight

The disco party of the summer happens tonight at the Twin River Events Center. Boogie down to 70’s superstars the Village People, Evelyn Champagne King, The Tramps and members of Chic. Shine on your disco ball and dance to the music all night long. All ages welcome for the 8PM show with tickets starting at $25.

David Crosby at the Z Monday

Why not hang out a day longer in the Whaling City for a big show Monday at the Zeiterion Theatre when the irrepressible David Crosby comes to town. Crosby recently completed a tour with his well known band mates Nash and Stills and has embarked on a solo tour which will undoubtedly be filled with some well known tunes and some great stories. Very few seats remain starting at $42.50. Show begins at 8PM.

Heart at Foxwoods Tonight

Heart’s sister team of Ann and Nancy Wilson have a permanent place among rock and roll royalty. Their roaring riffs and heavenly harmonies propelled them to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013 as one of the greatest female led rock bands of all time. They’re playing tonight at 8PM at the Grand Theatre at Foxwoods. A few tickets are still available starting at $40.   

RI Philharmonic at India Point on July 4th

An annual tradition returns to India Point Park in Providence tomorrow when the RI Philharmonic Pops performs their 4th of July concert. It’s always a blast to spend the evening of the 4th with Conductor Francisco Noya and the Phil. How many classical music fans do you know who got their start at free outdoor performances like these? Bring a blanket and the kids! Music starts at 7:30 – fireworks around 9:15.

Dueling Local Fests – July 4th at Simons 677 and Dusk

Local artists will celebrate the 4th with two day-long blowouts – Libertyfest and Revival Fest. First, check out Libertyfest on two stages at Simons 677 with bands like Swan Point, the Sweet Release and The Viennagram. Revival Fest is at Dusk with Smith and Weedon, Gymshorts, and Atlantic Thrills among others. Combined, there are around 50 bands playing! Music Starts at Noon at both venues. The Downtown Sundown Series is like an outdoor coffeehouse with a focus on area singer-songwriters. Its held at the Roger Williams Memorial in downtown Providence Saturday nights starting June 20. There’s great line up scheduled including up and coming songwriter Ian Fitzgerald, Dan Lilley, Cardboard Ox (pictured), and Allysen Callery (who may even play her set regular "Sundown"). Wickford Summer Concerts

Families are encouraged to attend the WIckford Summer Concert Series which begins on Tuesday June 16. All concerts are at the town wharf and artists include Nancy Paolino and the Black Tie Band, The RI Rednecks, and the White Eyed Lizard Band (pictured). Shows begin at 7PM and run until August 11. The Garden City Shopping Center in Cranston hosts a popular Wednesday night series every summer which features some of the best artists around. The series emphasizes oldies, R&B and Jazz. Carolyn's Vineyard

Carolyn's Sakonnet Vineyard has two music series this summer. On Sundays from 1PM-4PM, its world class jazz with performers like the Steve DeConti Trio, and the Doug Wolverton Trio (pictured). Thursday nights from 6PM-9PM, check out modern rock, folk and more with artists including Jesse Dee, Jetty, and Amy and the Engine. RI Philharmonic Pops

There are numerous free and inexpensive classical performances around the state this summer. The highlight has to be the annual 4th of July concert at India Point Park with the RI Philharmonic Pops Orchestra. The Pops also play Narragansett, Bristol and Pawtucket later in the summer.
