Blue Cross & Blue Shield of RI to Host Annual Day of Service
Friday, September 19, 2014
Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island's third annual company-wide day of community service, Blue across Rhode Island, will focus on local schools.
BCBSRI will provide grant funding and hundreds of volunteers to support initiatives for local schools around the state. The event will be held on Thursday, October 2.
Blue across Rhode Island is BCBSRI’s largest annual volunteer event, with 75 percent of BCBSRI associates participating each year. It has become the largest single-company volunteer day ever recorded in Rhode Island history. In honor of BCBSRI’s 75th anniversary, this year Blue across Rhode Island will focus on the future: Rhode Island’s children. Service sites and activities are focused on organizations that support kids’ health and wellness.

Approximately 700 BCBSRI associates, including President and CEO Peter Andruszkiewicz and the executive leadership team, will participate in the day of service. School-based programming activities will include:
· Transforming a blacktop lot into an inspiring play structure at Family Service of Rhode Island at Mary Fogarty Elementary School in South Providence.· Administering Fitnessgram Assessments for all students grades 5-8 at Highlander Charter School in Providence and Warren, a task that would take school staff a full academic year to complete.
· Completing a variety of projects at Meeting Street in Providence.
· Creating a garden, fencing in a play area, and updating a library at D’Abate Elementary School in Providence’s Olneyville.
· Assembling well-kid kits for various out of school time programs across the state.
Since Blue across Rhode Island’s inception three years ago, BCBSRI associates have provided over 7,400 volunteer hours. In addition to volunteers, BCBSRI also provides each organization with a $5,000 grant to put towards purchasing supplies for the volunteer project. Blue across Rhode Island is a signature effort of BCBSRI’s BlueAngel Community Investment program, which supports over 145 local nonprofit organizations each year with financial and in-kind services.
