Sen. Raptakis

Senator Leonidas P. Raptakis is calling on the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) to reject a 23.6% rate hike request from National Grid

“[The rate hike] is beyond reason and is going to hurt a lot of utility customers, residential and business alike,” said Raptakis. “Many Rhode Islanders are doing all they can to conserve energy already, but not too many of residents or business owners can expect a 23 percent pay increase each year. It is irresponsible for National Grid to come forward with this proposal for this huge increase at a time when Rhode Island families are hurting and when Rhode Island businesses are struggling to survive and stay open.”

The increase in rates from National Grid will add about $20 to the average residential customer's bill.

Raptakis has plans to reintroduce legislation in January 2015 to reign in future rate hikes from utility companies.

The proposed bill will be almost identical to the one Raptakis sponsored during a previous legislation session (2014-S 2175).
