ASM Global, the management company that has operated the Rhode Island Convention Center and the associated buildings, has notified the State of Rhode Island’s Department of Labor and Training that it is laying off 1,095 workers.

The WARN Act is a federal law requiring employers of 100 or more full-time workers to give 60-days advance notice of a plant closing or mass layoff. This federal law applies to employers in the State of Rhode Island.

As of July 1, the Los Angeles-based ASM Global will no longer operate three venues for the Rhode Island Convention Center Authority. Some if not all of the workers are expected to be hired by the new management firm.

Oak View Group will be replacing ASM.

At the March meeting of the Convention Center board meeting, according to the minutes, “The board unanimously chose Oak View Group (OVG) to be our preferred Management Services Company pursuant to negotiations led by our Executive Director. This was based on their professionalism, enthusiasm, opportunities for growth, emphasis on helping in our areas of struggle, such as parking and F&B.”

OVG is headquartered in Denver. The company claims it is a global sports and entertainment company founded by Tim Leiweke and Irving Azoff in 2015.

OVG’s mission is to be a "positive disruption to business as usual in the sports, live entertainment, and hospitality industries."

"OVG is world-renowned as the leading full-service live entertainment and hospitality group, with ten major new arenas either open or under development," says the company.
